The Meteorology Department reports that the low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a depression over the central-southwest Bay of Bengal by this morning.
As of 2:30 a.m. today, the system was located approximately 500 km southeast of Batticaloa. It is projected to develop further and move closer to Sri Lanka’s eastern coast.
Due to the influence of this system, cloudy skies are forecast across most parts of the island. The department also predicts the following weather conditions:
- Frequent showers or thundershowers in the Northern, North-Central, Eastern, Central, and Uva provinces, as well as in the Hambantota district.
- Evening or night showers in several other areas of the island.
- Morning showers or thundershowers in coastal areas of the Western and North-Western provinces.
Additionally, very heavy showers exceeding 150 mm are likely in some areas of the Eastern Province, while heavy showers above 100 mm are expected in parts of the Northern, North-Central, Central, and Uva provinces, along with the Hambantota district.
Fairly strong winds ranging from 35 to 45 km/h may affect the Northern, North-Central, and Eastern provinces and the Hambantota district.
The public is urged to take necessary precautions to minimize the risk of damage from temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
