Deega Danthu 1, celebrated as the most beautiful elephant in Kalawewa National Park, was found dead today after being fatally entangled in an illegal electric fence, the National Park Warden confirmed.
The incident occurred in the Inguruwa area of Andiyagala, as the elephant was making its way towards the Kahalla Pallekele Sanctuary, its regular habitat.
A Loss to Nature and Tourism
The majestic tusker, estimated to be 45–50 years old, had recently been relocated to the Kahalla Pallekele Sanctuary due to flooding caused by the overflowing Kala Wewa reservoir. Known for its extraordinary tusks—the longest among the Kalawewa elephants—Deega Danthu 1 was widely regarded as a treasure of the park and a key attraction for both local and international tourists.
Despite its imposing stature, the tusker was renowned for its gentle demeanor and had never posed a threat to humans.
The Legacy and Its Twin
Deega Danthu 1 was believed to be the last of its kind in the park, making its loss even more significant. Meanwhile, its twin, Deega Danthu 2, has been sighted in the Kala Wewa area recently, sparking interest due to its impressive tusks.
Investigation Underway
The police have launched an investigation to identify and apprehend those responsible for installing the unauthorized electric fence.
