Prime Minister Gunawardena Calls Meeting with Political Parties to Discuss Electoral Reforms

Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena has convened a gathering of all political parties represented in Parliament today, focusing on the imperative matter of electoral reforms. He stated, “We have called for this meeting on a request by the Cabinet. I will inform the Cabinet on the outcome of today’s meeting. The present government had obtained a mandate to bring in electoral reforms in 2019 and 2020,” addressing Parliament.

He further affirmed that numerous parties have expressed their willingness to participate in the meeting, assuring that there will be no cancellation of elections.

Contrarily, Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa declared that the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) under his leadership will abstain from attending the meeting. He asserted, “Hold elections first and then we can go for electoral reforms. The Government is trying to postpone elections in the guise of bringing in electoral reforms,” emphasizing his stance on the matter.(DM)
