The Achchuveli main road, connecting Palaly to Achchuveli, was officially reopened yesterday after being closed for over three decades due to regional conflict. This long-awaited reopening came as a result of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s directives, fulfilling a long-standing demand from the people of the Northern Province.
Despite the war having ended more than 15 years ago, the road had remained closed to the public until now. During a meeting on October 22, Northern Province Governor Nagalingam Vethanayagam urged President Dissanayake to prioritize reopening the road, emphasizing its importance to the local community.
In response, President Dissanayake directed security forces to review the security situation and coordinate with the Ministry of Defense and Defense Secretary, leading to the road’s reopening.
