Sri Lanka has witnessed an alarming escalation in Dengue cases, with a staggering 1,000 cases documented within the past three days, averaging around 300 cases per day.
Addressing the concerning situation, Dr. Nalin Ariyaratne, Director of the National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU), stated that the country has once again reached a critical point, recording an average of 250 cases daily. Dr. Ariyaratne highlighted the anticipated rise in Dengue cases due to the ongoing rainy conditions.
He urged the public to play a proactive role by maintaining cleanliness in their surroundings and eliminating potential mosquito breeding grounds to mitigate the spread of Dengue.
“As of December 04, a total of 77,487 cases have been reported in 2023, with the Colombo district reporting the highest number at 16,363.”
Furthermore, the Western Province has recorded the highest number of cases among provinces, standing at 36,266, representing over 47 percent of the total reported cases. The gravity of the situation underscores the urgent need for community awareness and preventive measures to curb the rapid spread of Dengue in the region.
