Anura Dissanayake Advocates for a Knowledge-Centric Economy as Key Goal for Sri Lanka

Anura Dissanayake, the presidential candidate of the National People’s Power, has underscored the establishment of a knowledge-centric economy as a primary goal of his government.

Dissanayake highlighted the untapped potential of Sri Lanka’s vast maritime resources, drawing parallels to India’s advanced fish resource management techniques. He explained how Indian fishermen receive real-time updates on fish populations via mobile notifications, enabling them to maximize their catch efficiently. He proposed implementing similar technological advancements in Sri Lanka, including the use of chips and computer systems to monitor and manage marine ecosystems effectively.

He also emphasized the need to integrate technology and science across various industries to enhance productivity and sustainability. Dissanayake noted that Sri Lanka’s rich human resources, bolstered by a long history of organized education dating back to the arrival of Mihindu Maha Rahath Thero and Buddhism, are well-suited to support the development of a knowledge-based economy.

Citing the success of India’s IT industry, which generated $253 million last year, Dissanayake illustrated how focusing on creativity and intellectual capital can lead to substantial economic benefits. He argued that, unlike traditional industries dependent on raw materials, the IT sector thrives on innovation and creative thinking, offering greater value and growth potential.

Dissanayake called for a shift towards a knowledge-centric economy, emphasizing that the future of global progress depends on new creativity and knowledge-driven advancements.
