Anura Kumara Dissanayake has officially taken office as the 9th Executive President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka. The swearing-in ceremony took place a short while ago at the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo, with Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya presiding over the proceedings.
Dissanayake arrived at the Presidential Secretariat to a warm welcome from a large gathering of party supporters and well-wishers. After taking the oath of office in a simple but solemn ceremony, he delivered a brief statement, reaffirming his commitment to the people and the nation.
The 56-year-old leader was declared the winner of the presidential election last night by the Election Commission, following a second round of counting. Dissanayake made history by becoming the first President of Sri Lanka to be elected through a run-off vote. He defeated his closest competitor, Sajith Premadasa of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB).
In Saturday’s election, no candidate received more than 50% of the votes in the first round, prompting the Election Commission to order a second round, in which National People’s Power (NPP) leader Dissanayake emerged victorious.
Popularly known as “AKD” in Sri Lanka, Dissanayake’s win marks a significant turning point in the country’s political landscape. His party, Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), long considered a marginal player, has gained new prominence under his leadership, largely driven by a platform of anti-corruption and calls for a change in the political culture.
Dissanayake, originally from rural Thambuttegama in the North Central Province, holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Kelaniya. He joined the JVP in 1987, at the height of the anti-Indian insurgency, and throughout his political career, he has consistently fought against corruption and championed the rights of the people.
Dissanayake’s rise to the presidency, at a time when Sri Lanka faces significant economic and political challenges, reflects the public’s desire for new leadership and a fresh political vision for the country.
