Archbishop of Colombo Criticizes Proposed Online Safety Act, Advocates for Legal Transformation

His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, the Archbishop of Colombo, has voiced concerns that the proposed Online Safety Act by the Sri Lankan Government would curtail the people’s right to expression and the pursuit of truth. He strongly called for efforts leading towards a dictatorship to be thwarted.

Speaking at an event in Colombo, he emphasized the need for a transformative vision in the country, advocating for a legal framework that ensures equal treatment for all religions and communities.

His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith urged for the establishment of a new Sri Lanka where all resources are safeguarded, breaking free from foreign allegiances to achieve self-sufficiency. He envisioned an economy that benefits all citizens.

“Now is the time to reject the traditional politics that has governed this country thus far,” he asserted, emphasizing the elimination of nepotism from the nation.

The Archbishop highlighted the urgency to replace oppressive political leadership with a leadership that genuinely loves the country. He pointed out media outlets with political affiliations, cautioning against their efforts to mislead the public.

Given the reliance on social media for expression, His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith criticized the government’s attempt to limit people’s rights to expression and the pursuit of truth through social media regulation.
