Cabinet Approves Draft Bill for Constitutional Reforms

The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the preparation of a draft bill aimed at amending Article 83(b) of the Constitution. The proposed amendment seeks to substitute the clause “exceeding 5 years” for the current clause “exceeding 6 years.”

President Ranil Wickremesinghe submitted this proposal to the Cabinet to eliminate any ambiguity and inconsistency regarding the tenure of the President and the Parliament as outlined in Articles 30(2), 62(2), and 83(b) of the Constitution.
