The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the importation of 70,000 metric tonnes of rice as a short-term measure to mitigate the ongoing shortage in the market.
According to Minister of Trade, Commerce, Food Security, and Cooperative Development Wasantha Samarasinghe, the rice will be procured through Lanka Sathosa and the Sri Lanka State Trading (General) Corporation.
Speaking at a press briefing held today (20) at the Government Information Department, the minister confirmed that the Cabinet had sanctioned the importation of ‘Swarna’ Nadu Rice to ensure market stability and food security.
