Cabinet Approves Penal Code Amendment Bill to Ban Corporal Punishment

The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the publication of the Penal Code (Amendment) Bill in the government gazette, with plans to submit it to Parliament for approval.

This decision, made during the cabinet meeting on April 29, 2024, aims to amend the Penal Code to explicitly prohibit corporal punishment in all forms. The necessary legal framework has been drafted accordingly.

The Department of Government Information (DGI) confirmed that the Attorney General has cleared the draft prepared by the legal draftsman. Following this, the Cabinet granted approval to the proposal presented by the Minister of Justice, Prisons Affairs, and Constitutional Reforms to proceed with gazetting the bill and submitting it to Parliament for further approval.
