Agrarian organizations in the Central Province have warned that vegetable prices, already on the rise, could increase further due to heavy rains and floods that have devastated crops.
Farmers expressed concerns about the challenges of harvesting their crops and applying fertilizer to their fields. Flooding has severely affected vegetable cultivation in several areas, with tomatoes, beans, brinjals, and green chillies being the hardest hit.
Y.M.S. Bandara, a representative of the Ambana Farmer Organisation, noted that the situation is worsened by the unavailability of wholesale traders from other regions. Transport disruptions have prevented these traders from reaching Economic Centers to purchase vegetables.
