Ceylon Teachers’ Union Announces Trade Union Action and Threatens to Withdraw from O/L Exam Paper Marking

The Ceylon Teachers’ Union (CTU) has announced plans to engage in trade union action by reporting sick on Wednesday, June 26.

CTU General Secretary Joseph Stalin stated that if their demands are not met as promised, teachers will also withdraw from marking the Ordinary Level (O/L) exam papers.

However, Minister of Education Susil Premajayantha, speaking at a ceremony yesterday (18), remarked that students are continuing to fulfill their academic needs despite the teachers’ trade union actions.

In related news, the University Trade Union Joint Committee (UTUJC) reported positive discussions with the University Grants Commission (UGC) regarding wage issues. UTUJC co-chairman Dhammika Priyantha emphasized that authorities will be given a week to address the wage disparities.

Priyantha also announced the launch of a ‘Sathyagraha’ campaign in front of universities starting today (19). He warned that if no solutions are forthcoming, the Sathyagraha will be brought to Colombo.
