China has praised Sri Lanka for its commitment to promoting and protecting human rights during a recent session. Li Xiaomei, Minister-Counsellor at the Permanent Mission of China to the UN in Geneva, defended Sri Lanka’s actions against a Human Rights Council resolution that advocates for an evidence collection and accountability mechanism, claiming it overlooks Sri Lanka’s achievements.
Li highlighted Sri Lanka’s establishment of the Truth and Reconciliation Committee, its cooperation with human rights mechanisms, anti-terrorism measures, protection of vulnerable groups, economic recovery efforts, and improvements in living standards.
“China appreciates Sri Lanka’s efforts to promote and protect human rights,” Li stated. She reiterated China’s strong support for Sri Lanka’s pursuit of political stability, economic development, national independence, and sustainable progress.
Li emphasized that China supports addressing human rights differences through dialogue and cooperation, and opposes the politicization of human rights issues. She criticized Human Rights Council Resolution 51/1, which she believes disregards Sri Lanka’s efforts and interferes in the country’s internal affairs under the guise of human rights advocacy.
“This is a clear example of the politicization of human rights issues,” Li remarked. She called on other nations to respect Sri Lanka’s chosen path for human rights development, reject interference and political pressure, and return to constructive dialogue and cooperation.
