Continued Showery and Windy Conditions Expected Over Island Due to Active Southwest Monsoon

The prevailing showery and windy conditions over the island are expected to continue due to the active Southwest monsoon, according to the Meteorology Department.

Showers are expected at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-Western, and Southern provinces. Heavy showers exceeding 100mm are likely in some areas of the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, as well as in the Nuwara-Eliya district. In the evening or night, showers or thundershowers may occur in a few places in the Uva province and in the Ampara and Batticaloa districts.

Strong winds ranging from 50-60 kmph can be expected at times over the Western slopes of the central hills, and in the Northern, North-Central, Western, Southern, and North-Western provinces, as well as in the Trincomalee and Monaragala districts.

Sea Areas:

The sea areas around the island will be very rough due to the active Southwest monsoon. Naval and fishing communities are advised not to venture into these sea areas until further notice. Wave heights may increase to about 2.5 to 3.5 meters in the sea areas off the coast, extending from Kalpitiya to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle, and Hambantota.

Nearshore sea areas extending from Kalpitiya to Matara via Colombo and Galle may experience surges due to sea waves. Showers or thundershowers are expected at times in the sea areas off the coast, extending from Puttalam to Matara via Colombo.

Winds will be south-westerly in the sea areas around the island, with speeds of 40-50 kmph, potentially increasing to 60-70 kmph at times. The sea areas around the island will be very rough at times, with wave heights increasing to about 2.5–3.5 meters in the sea areas off the coast extending from Kalpitiya to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle, and Hambantota. Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.
