Cyclonic Storm Alert: Heavy Rain, Gusty Winds, and Rough Seas Expected

The Department of Meteorology has issued a warning about the deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal, located approximately 110 km east of Trincomalee as of 11:30 a.m. today (27). The system is expected to approach Sri Lanka’s east coast and intensify into a cyclonic storm within the next six hours.

Under its influence, cloudy skies will dominate most parts of the island, with very heavy rainfall and strong gusty winds anticipated in the Northern, North-Central, Eastern, Northwestern, and Central provinces.

In a “Red” advisory, the Department highlighted the following:

  • Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Northern, North-Central, Central, Western, and Northwestern provinces, as well as in Trincomalee, Batticaloa, and Kegalle districts.
  • Certain areas are likely to receive very heavy rainfall exceeding 150 mm, while other parts of the island may experience fairly heavy showers above 75 mm.

The warning also emphasized that sea conditions around the island would be rough to very rough, with wind speeds potentially reaching 60–70 kmph. Swell waves of 2.5–3.0 meters are expected off the coast from Batticaloa to Kankasanthurai via Trincomalee, and near-shore areas may experience surges due to these waves.

Precautions and Public Advisories

  • Naval and fishing communities are strongly advised against venturing into deep and shallow sea areas until further notice.
  • The general public is urged to remain vigilant during the extreme weather forecasted from November 26 to 27 and contact local disaster management authorities for emergency assistance.

The Department of Meteorology advises everyone to stay updated on further warnings and take necessary precautions to ensure safety.
