Delimitation Committee Chairman Hails Supreme Court Ruling on Election Postponement as a Victory for the People

Mahinda Deshapriya, Chairman of the National Delimitation Committee for Local Government Institutions, praised the Supreme Court’s recent decision on the postponement of the 2023 Local Government Elections, calling it a victory for the people.

Speaking to the media in Anuradhapura, Deshapriya stressed that delaying the election was a mistake, and the court’s recognition of this fact marks an important step toward justice.

Deshapriya also expressed his belief that the Local Government Elections would likely be held after the 2024 presidential election. He remarked, “This decision is not surprising, as the Supreme Court has consistently ruled that postponing or failing to hold elections violates the rights of the people. I see this as justice finally being served, albeit delayed.”

He further added, “We expect that the Election Commission will take steps to hold this election later this year, once the presidential election is completed.”
