The demerit points system for traffic offenses will be implemented within the next three months, Commissioner General of the Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) Nishantha Anuruddha Weerasinghe announced.
Addressing the media, Weerasinghe said the public will be informed once the system is implemented. The new system will allow for a maximum of 24 demerit points.
“If drivers accumulate the maximum demerit points, their licenses will be canceled. The driver must then complete training, pass exams, and obtain a medical certificate to acquire a new license,” he explained.
“The system has not started yet. A tender has been called, and nine companies have applied. The evaluation process for implementation is currently underway,” he added.
