Approximately 22 percent of households in Sri Lanka are in debt due to the recent economic crisis, according to the Department of Census and Statistics.

The department highlights that the average monthly income of 60.5 percent of all households has decreased.

The Department of Census and Statistics also notes that 54.9 percent of individuals aged between 3 and 21 years have been affected by the economic crisis, with 93.5 percent of them adopting strategies to mitigate its impact.

Since March 2022, 14.2 percent of people over the age of 15 have lost their jobs due to the economic crisis, with job losses being higher among males than females.

In 2023, 91 percent of households in Sri Lanka experienced an increase in average monthly expenditure, while 7 percent of the population changed their health treatment system. The survey reveals that 81.7 percent of those who changed their treatment methods cited a lack of funds as the primary reason.
