Expatriate Workers Sent $577.5 Million to the Country in August – A Consecutive Share of $500 Million

Since Ranil took over the country, $13 billion has been sent to Sri Lanka.

In August, expatriate workers legally sent $577.5 million to Sri Lanka through the banking system.

Compared to August of last year, the amount of remittances sent to Sri Lanka in August this year increased by 11 percent.

Since President Ranil Wickremesinghe took office and handed over the foreign employment sector to Mr. Manusha Nanayakkara, expatriate workers have sent a total of $13.016 billion to the country.

This year alone, expatriate workers have sent $4.288 billion to Sri Lanka.

He requested that $500 million per month be sent to the country through the legal system to eliminate queues for Fuel, gas, milk powder, and to import essential goods needed by the country. This request received a good response from expatriate workers. Since March last year, remittances sent by expatriate workers have consistently exceeded the $500 million mark each month for the past seven months.

The Ministry of Labour and Foreign Employment has also worked to provide various incentives, including electric vehicle import licenses, multipurpose loans at low interest rates, and housing loan schemes for workers who send money to the country through the legal system.
