Foreign Ministry Launches Online Authentication for Birth, Marriage, and Death Certificates

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in partnership with the Registrar General’s Department, has launched an online authentication process for birth, marriage, and death certificates.

Through this new online system, Sri Lankan citizens can apply for the authentication of their birth, marriage, and death certificates via the Consular Affairs Division’s online platform. Authenticated certificates will be emailed to the applicants, eliminating the need for in-person applications or the collection of authenticated documents.

Foreign Minister Ali Sabry emphasized the importance of digitizing document authentication services to improve efficiency and accessibility for the public. He noted that the Ministry’s journey in online document authentication began with the launch of online verification for GCE O/L and A/L certificates in collaboration with the Department of Examinations, marking a major milestone in the digital transformation process.

Minister Sabry further highlighted that the introduction of online authentication for birth, marriage, and death certificates issued by the Registrar General’s Department is another key advancement in the digitization process. He also pointed out that educational certificates, along with birth, marriage, and death certificates, make up about 55 percent of the documents authenticated daily by the Consular Affairs Division.

The Consular Affairs Division has enhanced its online document authentication services by integrating its Electronic Document Authentication System (e-DAS) with other key government entities, including local universities, the Sri Lanka Medical Council, Sri Lanka Police, the Department of Motor Traffic, TVEC, the Department of the Registrar of Companies, the British Council, and trade chambers. This integration aims to make document authentication more accessible to the public.
