The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has requested the U.S. Embassy in Sri Lanka to lift the security advisory currently in place for U.S. tourists and citizens in the country.
On October 23, the U.S. Embassy in Colombo issued a security advisory, urging American citizens to avoid travel to Arugam Bay until further notice.
In response, security forces have arrested six suspects linked to the incident that prompted the advisory. Earlier this week, Defence Secretary (Retd.) Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha visited the Eastern Province to evaluate the security situation in Arugam Bay.
The Ministry of Defence reported that local military and police officials briefed the Defence Secretary on the current security measures. Based on his findings, he instructed relevant authorities to implement necessary actions to ensure the safety of key tourist destinations, including Arugam Bay.
The Defence Secretary stressed the importance of maintaining tourist safety while respecting their freedom and instilling confidence in their security.
