In response to the ongoing and severe flooding, all schools in the Galle district have been temporarily closed for both Monday (09) and Tuesday (10). The decision has been made to ensure the safety and well-being of students, teachers, and staff in the face of this natural disaster.
The flooding has had a significant impact on the region, with 6,940 individuals from 2,900 families being affected in the Galle district. District Secretary Shanath Weerasinghe has reported that, as a result of the relentless showers, three houses have been completely destroyed, and 199 houses have sustained damage.
In an effort to safeguard residents from the flooding, authorities have directed 20 families to seek refuge in safe camps. The situation remains dynamic and challenging, with floodwaters posing a threat to homes and communities.
To address the heightened risk associated with these adverse weather conditions, landslide warnings have been issued for specific areas, including Welendawatte and Yakkalamulla. It is imperative that residents in these regions remain vigilant and take appropriate precautions to ensure their safety.
The local authorities, along with emergency response teams, are working diligently to provide assistance to those affected by the floods and to manage the evolving situation. Further updates and guidance will be issued as the situation develops.
