Health and Industry Minister Predicts 90% Increase in Local Medicine Production by Next Year

Health and Industry Minister Ramesh Pathirana has projected a remarkable 90% increase in the production of local medicines by next year.

Minister Pathirana stated that this expected surge in local medicine production builds upon initiatives launched by Professor Senaka Bibile, aimed at bolstering the country’s industrial sector.

According to the minister, these efforts have led to substantial growth and are revolutionizing the pharmaceutical industry in Sri Lanka.

The Sri Lanka Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association currently produces over 200 different types of pharmaceuticals. The association now commands a 20% share of the local pharmaceutical market, demonstrating its increasing influence and capability.

Minister Pathirana highlighted that approximately 25% of the essential drugs used in government hospitals and clinics are supplied by local manufacturers.
