Heat Index Advisory Issued by Meteorology Department for Several Provinces and Districts

The Meteorology Department has issued a Heat Index Advisory for the Northern, North-central, Sabaragamuwa, Eastern, and North-Western provinces, along with Monaragala and Hambantota districts.

According to the advisory, the heat index, representing the temperature felt on the human body, is anticipated to rise to the ‘Caution level’ in certain areas of the Northern, North-central, Western, Sabaragamuwa, Eastern, Southern, and North-Western provinces, as well as in the Monaragala district on the upcoming day (29).

Under these conditions, prolonged exposure and activity may lead to fatigue, while continued exertion could result in heat cramps.

To mitigate potential risks, the public is advised to stay hydrated, take frequent breaks in shaded areas, and limit strenuous outdoor activities. Furthermore, they are urged to check on vulnerable individuals such as the elderly and sick, never leave children unattended in vehicles, and opt for lightweight, white, or light-colored clothing.

It’s important to note that the Heat Index Forecast, derived from relative humidity and maximum temperature, reflects the perceived temperature on the body rather than the forecasted maximum temperature. This forecast is generated by the Department of Meteorology for the following day using global numerical weather prediction model data.
