Deputy Director of the Meteorology Department, Meril Mendis, has warned of possible thundershowers exceeding 100 mm tomorrow afternoon, after 2 p.m.
He noted that the parliamentary elections are scheduled for tomorrow and advised voters to visit polling stations before the rain starts.
“With a low-pressure area forming over the south-west Bay of Bengal, heavy showers of up to 100 mm are expected in parts of the Central, Uva, Sabaragamuwa, and Southern Provinces, as well as in the Kalutara district,” Mendis said.
The low-pressure system is also expected to bring afternoon thundershowers to most parts of the island today and in the coming days.
Several spells of showers are expected in the Northern Province, while other areas may experience showers or thundershowers during the evening or night. Misty conditions are also expected in the mornings in parts of the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, and Uva Provinces, as well as in the Galle and Matara districts.
The public is urged to take necessary precautions to minimize risks from strong localised winds and lightning during thundershowers.
