Heightened Security Measures for Christmas Day Masses Across 2,300 Churches Nationwide

More than 2,300 churches throughout the country are set to conduct masses on Christmas Day, with special security measures in place, involving the deployment of over 7,500 police personnel.

In anticipation of the Christmas and festive season, law enforcement has implemented a comprehensive security program across the entire country to ensure public safety, according to police authorities.

Police Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa stated that Acting IGP Thennakoon has issued instructions to all senior officers and OICs to make necessary security arrangements. Circulars outlining the implementation of security measures have been distributed to Senior DIGs and Police OICs.

A Civil Committee has been established at each of the approximately 2,862 identified churches nationwide, with 2,340 planning to hold masses on Christmas Day.

Senior DIGs, ASPs, HQIs, and OICs in respective police areas have been directed to coordinate with these committees to implement necessary security measures, as per the spokesman.

Acting IGP Thennakoon has instructed the use of the Special Task Force of Police personnel for relevant security measures and urged seeking assistance from the Army or other security forces if required.

To address security concerns, a dedicated hotline (0112472757) at Police Headquarters has been established for priests of churches.

Meanwhile, the public has been urged by the police to take precautions for the safety of homes and business premises when leaving for trips or events.

Special operations targeting reckless drivers will be carried out during the festive season, according to police authorities.
