The International Cricket Council (ICC) has appointed Sumathi Dharmawardena P.C. as the new Independent Chair of the ICC Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU), effective November 1, 2024. Dharmawardena succeeds Sir Ronnie Flanagan, who retired after 14 years in the role.
Dharmawardena brings extensive experience, having served as an Additional Solicitor General at Sri Lanka’s Attorney General’s Department, where he represented the Sri Lankan government and the Ministry of Sport in numerous legal matters, the ICC stated. His background also includes work with Interpol and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, particularly in investigating sports-related corruption.
Additionally, Dharmawardena has overseen multiple investigations and prosecutions under Sri Lanka’s Prevention of Offences Relating to Sports Act, a law he was instrumental in developing. He has represented Sri Lanka in discussions with global sports organizations, demonstrating a strong commitment to integrity in sports.
As the Independent Chair of the ICC’s Anti-Corruption Unit, Dharmawardena will oversee and lead the ACU, working alongside the General Manager of Integrity at the executive level.
