India Confident of Positive Relations with Neighbours Amid Political Shifts, Says External Affairs Minister Jaishankar

India does not seek to control every political move of its neighbours, nor does it expect neighbouring countries to follow what India deems desirable, stated External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. However, he expressed confidence that the fundamental realities of interdependence will ensure that India’s relationships with its neighbours remain constructive and positive.

Addressing questions about regime changes in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, Jaishankar clarified that India is focused on building economic regionalism in South Asia. Speaking at the Asia Society in New York, he reiterated that while India has stepped forward to assist Sri Lanka during its economic crisis without political conditions, it respects the internal political dynamics of its neighbours.

Touching on Bangladesh, Jaishankar addressed concerns over rising Islamist influence and political instability, emphasizing that India reads, anticipates, and responds to these developments while maintaining a positive outlook for future relations. He expressed confidence that mutual benefits and interdependence will guide the region toward continued cooperation.
