India Delivers First Payment for Hybrid Power Projects on Jaffna Islands

The first payment for the implementation of Hybrid Power Projects on three islands off Jaffna was handed over to Secretary of the Ministry of Power and Energy, Sulakshana Jayawardena, and Chairman of the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority (SLSEA), Ranjith Sepala, by the High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka, Santosh Jha.

A Memorandum of Understanding for the implementation of the hybrid renewable energy projects on Delft, Nainativu, and Analaitivu islands was signed between the Government of India and the Government of Sri Lanka in March 2022. The contract for project implementation was subsequently signed by SLSEA with M/s. U Solar Clean Energy Solutions Pvt. Ltd. on March 1, 2024.

The project aims to meet the energy needs of the three islands, which are not connected to the national grid, by combining various renewable sources, including solar and wind, to optimize energy capacity.

Initial work has already commenced at the three sites, with the project scheduled for completion by early March 2025 and handover expected by late April 2025.

Funded by a grant of USD 11 million from the Government of India, the project underscores India’s commitment to bilateral cooperation in the energy sector and highlights the human-centric nature of India’s development partnership initiatives in Sri Lanka.
