India has successfully tested a domestically developed long-range hypersonic missile, achieving a significant milestone in military technology, the government announced on Sunday. This development places India among a small group of nations with advanced hypersonic capabilities, alongside China, Russia, and the United States.
The hypersonic missile, created by the state-run Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in collaboration with industry partners, is designed to carry payloads over distances exceeding 1,500 km (930 miles) for the armed forces. According to the government’s statement, the missile’s flight data confirmed successful terminal maneuvers and impact with a high degree of accuracy.
The test-firing was conducted on Saturday from Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Island, located off the eastern coast of Odisha state.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh described the test as a “historic achievement” in a post on X (formerly Twitter), noting that it elevates India into an exclusive group of nations with such advanced and critical technology.
