Indian High Commissioner Emphasizes Unprecedented Support for Sri Lanka in Times of Crisis

The Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Gopal Baglay, asserted that India responded to the unprecedented crisis in Sri Lanka with unparalleled swiftness and strength, surpassing any previous crisis support or aid efforts. Speaking on the “At Hydepark” current affairs program on Ada Derana 24, the outgoing Indian diplomat in Colombo also delved into the vision for advancing bilateral relations between Sri Lanka and India, aligning with India’s anticipated economic growth.

Baglay highlighted India’s multifaceted support during the crisis, both bilaterally and internationally, emphasizing India’s clear and committed leadership to foster a robust India-Sri Lanka relationship.

Addressing concerns about Chinese vessels visiting Colombo, Baglay underscored that safeguarding freedom of navigation in the Indian Ocean is a shared responsibility of both India and Sri Lanka. He stressed the need for collaborative efforts in addressing maritime challenges, asserting that regional security is mutual and indivisible.

Baglay emphasized the interdependence of India’s and Sri Lanka’s security, stating, “When India is secured, Sri Lanka is secured, and when Sri Lanka is secured, India is secured.”

Discussing India’s future positioning, Baglay pointed out that India, currently the fifth-largest economy globally, aspires to be among the top three by 2047, aiming for a USD 30 trillion economy. He assured that Sri Lanka would be a key beneficiary of India’s prosperity, highlighting India’s commitment to strengthening ties with Sri Lanka.

“We consider the world as our family, and in that family, the neighborhood comes first,” Baglay concluded, emphasizing the importance of mutual growth for the well-being of both nations. Source – adaderana.lk
