IndiGo to Launch Chennai-Jaffna Flights from September 1, Expanding India-Sri Lanka Air Connectivity

IndiGo, a leading Indian airline, will commence flight operations between Chennai and Jaffna starting September 1, according to an official announcement.

Currently, India’s Alliance Air operates daily flights to Jaffna. The service initially started with viability gap financing provided by the Indian Ministry of External Affairs to enhance connectivity between northern Sri Lanka and southern India.

However, according to a source in Jaffna, this financial support has been withdrawn as flight operations have become commercially viable, prompting IndiGo to enter the market.

Plans are also underway to expand the Jaffna International Airport, further boosting regional connectivity.

In addition, the passenger ferry service between Nagapattinam in India and Kankesanthurai (KKS) near Jaffna recently resumed operations. The ferry, named ‘Sivagangai’ and operated by IndSri Ferry Services, completed its maiden journey on the route in approximately four hours, carrying around 50 passengers.
