Inland Revenue Warns Public of Scammers Posing as Tax Officials

The Department of Inland Revenue has issued a warning about individuals impersonating Inland Revenue Department (IRD) officials and scamming people by collecting money under the guise of tax payments.

According to the department’s central committee, reports of such scams have surfaced in Colombo, Panadura, Negombo, Wennappuwa, and Minuwangoda.

The central committee has clarified that genuine Inland Revenue officers will never collect money or cheques directly from taxpayers. Instead, they will only instruct taxpayers to deposit payments into bank accounts held in the name of the Commissioner General of Inland Revenue.

The Department of Inland Revenue urges the public to refrain from giving money to these scammers and to report any such incidents to the police immediately. The department also requests that anyone who has already been scammed report the incident to the nearest police station.
