“Iranian and Sri Lankan Presidents to Inaugurate Major Water and Energy Projects”

According to reports from Iranian media, several significant water and energy projects are set to be inaugurated by the presidents of Iran and Sri Lanka in the near future.

The Uma Oya Multipurpose project, comprising two dams named Dyraaba and Puhulpola, along with a 25-kilometer water transmission tunnel, is slated for inauguration in May, with Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi expected to be in attendance. This project also encompasses two major hydroelectric power plants, each capable of generating 60 megawatts of power.

Considered one of the most substantial technical and engineering service projects undertaken by Iranian companies in Sri Lanka, the Uma Oya multipurpose project is located approximately 200 kilometers southeast of Colombo city. Its objectives include enhancing irrigation for 5000 acres of agricultural land, transferring 145 million cubic meters of water annually, and producing 290 GW/h of power.

Notably, the Uma Oya project stands out due to its complex and varied components, and it represents one of the largest endeavors carried out by Iranian contractors overseas.

In August 2023, Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Ali Sabry visited Iran and met with his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir Abdollahian in Tehran. During a joint press conference, Amir Abdollahian described the visit as a “turning point” in Iran-Sri Lanka relations.

Discussions between the two foreign ministers focused on expanding cooperation in various fields such as trade, tourism, science, and culture, with an emphasis on implementing existing agreements and exploring new ones. Additionally, the exchange of prisoners was among the topics discussed.

Sabry emphasized Sri Lanka’s strong and friendly ties with Iran, and reports prior to his visit suggested a desire to revitalize Sri Lanka’s presence in the Iranian tea market.

The Iranian foreign minister underscored Tehran’s commitment to cooperation with Asian countries, expressing hope for friendly and constructive collaboration among nations on the continent.
