Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara has formally lodged a complaint with the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) today, calling for an inquiry into the inclusion of inaccurate educational qualifications in the Parliament database.
Addressing the media, Minister Nanayakkara expressed concern that the erroneous information may have been deliberately inserted to defame him or erode public trust in the government.
The minister’s name had been incorrectly listed as “Dr. Harshana Nanayakkara” on the official Parliament website. Following a complaint, officials responsible for updating the site promptly corrected the error.
Last week, the Parliamentary Communications Department admitted that the mistake stemmed from incorrect data entry regarding the minister’s educational qualifications.
Given recent controversies surrounding the credentials of other government MPs, Minister Nanayakkara underscored the importance of investigating how such errors occur.
Clarifying his stance, the minister stated that he had never used the title “Dr.” on his business cards or official biographies.
“It’s clear that someone might be trying to harm my reputation and undermine my credibility within my party by spreading false information,” Nanayakkara said.
He urged the CID to conduct a thorough investigation and take appropriate action if wrongdoing is discovered. The minister also noted that legal measures, including a civil case, are being considered for the reputational damage caused by various media reports surrounding the incident.
Nanayakkara emphasized that his intention is not to target any individual but to uncover the truth and ensure accountability.
