King Charles III Diagnosed with Cancer; Postpones Public Engagements for Treatment

Buckingham Palace announced on Monday that Britain’s King Charles III has been diagnosed with a form of cancer, prompting him to postpone public engagements to focus on undergoing treatment. Despite the health setback, the palace stated that the 75-year-old monarch remains “wholly positive” about the situation, less than 18 months into his reign.

King Charles, who ascended to the throne in September 2022 following the passing of Queen Elizabeth, has already commenced a series of treatments. The palace expressed his eagerness to return to full-time duties as soon as possible.

This revelation follows Charles’ recent three-night hospital stay last month, during which he underwent a corrective procedure for a benign enlarged prostate. A separate health concern was identified during that hospitalization, leading to tests confirming the presence of a “form of cancer,” as disclosed by the palace. However, specific details about the type of cancer were not provided.

The palace clarified that the king does not have prostate cancer and assured that, during the treatment period, he will continue to undertake state business and official paperwork as usual. Meetings with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will persist, while Queen Camilla will proceed with her scheduled engagements.

Despite the diagnosis, King Charles appeared in good spirits on Sunday when he attended a church service with Queen Camilla. The monarch’s daughter-in-law, Kate, the Princess of Wales, is also recovering from planned treatments, with her return to royal duties expected after Easter.

In an unusual move, King Charles chose to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and foster public understanding, according to Buckingham Palace. Leaders from around the world, including Australia, Canada, and U.S. President Joe Biden, have extended their best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Prince Harry, the king’s younger son, is set to travel to the UK in the coming days to personally visit his father. Charles’ reign, marked by the significant ceremonial event of his coronation, has garnered favorable views in polls, although recent family tensions, especially involving Prince Harry and Prince William, have cast shadows over the royal family.

Amidst health concerns, Ingrid Seward, editor-in-chief of Majesty Magazine, noted that Charles may need to slow down, given his recent workaholic tendencies. However, Seward dismissed any possibility of Charles abdicating the throne, emphasizing his commitment to his role despite the challenges he faces.
