The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has announced that the third generator of the Lakvijaya Thermal Power Plant in Norochcholai, initially taken offline for maintenance work, is slated to be reintegrated into the national grid on either Thursday (30th Nov) or Friday (1st Dec).
Engineer Noel Priyantha, the spokesperson for CEB, confirmed the completion of one operational test and disclosed that the generator would be synchronized with the national grid following additional operational tests and associated activities. This move is expected to contribute an additional 300 megawatts to the national grid capacity.
Originally scheduled for reconnection on Wednesday (29), the third generator’s delayed integration is part of the meticulous testing and preparation procedures to ensure seamless functionality.
Currently, the daily electricity generation mix comprises 63 percent from hydropower plants and 18 percent from thermal power plants. Notably, 82 percent of the total electricity generated is derived from renewable sources, including hydro, wind, and solar power.
It is noteworthy that the water capacity of hydropower plants has reached 96 percent at present, underlining the favorable conditions for hydroelectric power generation.
