Lawyers Collective Urges Voters to Prioritize Democracy and Rule of Law in Presidential Election

The Lawyers Collective is calling on the voting public to prioritize the protection of democracy, the rule of law, and judicial independence when casting their votes in the upcoming Presidential Election.

The organization underscores that maintaining the rule of law is crucial for the nation’s well-being, contributing to a sustainable and prosperous economy, a democratic and equitable social order, and accountable governance.

It points out that Sri Lanka has experienced a gradual decline in the rule of law and democratic values over the years, which has adversely affected the country’s economic health and the daily lives of its citizens.

The Lawyers Collective highlights that this decline has led to economic mismanagement, widespread bribery and corruption, impunity, severe human rights abuses, and violence against individuals and property.

Furthermore, the Collective notes that several laws have been enacted that undermine human rights, democracy, and the decision-making processes of those most affected.

To achieve economic and social stability, the Collective emphasizes the need to strengthen institutions such as Parliament, the Judiciary, the Public Service—including the Police—and other independent bodies. Addressing corruption and the misuse of public resources is also deemed essential for the country’s progress.
