The number of fatalities due to leptospirosis in the Jaffna district has increased to 8, according to the Epidemiology Unit of the Ministry of Health.

Currently, 39 patients are receiving treatment in hospitals, with cases reported from three health medical officer divisions: Point Pedro, Chavakachcheri, and Karavetti.

Dr. Thushani Dabarera, a specialist at the Epidemiology Unit, revealed that 58 cases of leptospirosis have been recorded as of yesterday. Among the patients, 28 are being treated at Point Pedro Hospital, while 11 are receiving care at Jaffna Hospital.

The Ministry of Health dispatched two health teams to the Northern Province last week to investigate the outbreak and assess containment measures.

National Leptospirosis Situation

On a national scale, 12,000 cases of leptospirosis have been reported this year, with 85 cases recorded in December alone. Tragically, 200 deaths have been attributed to the disease so far this year, highlighting the severity of the outbreak.

The Ministry of Health continues to urge the public to take preventive measures, especially in high-risk areas, to curb the spread of the disease.
