The Election Commission has decided to issue the announcement for the upcoming Local Government (LG) Elections only after the conclusion of the 2024 G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination.
According to the Commission, making the announcement earlier could prompt candidates to begin campaigning during the exam period, causing disruptions. To avoid this, the announcement will be withheld until the examinations are completed.
The 2024 Advanced Level Examination faced delays due to adverse weather conditions but is expected to resume this week.
Meanwhile, a crucial meeting of political party leaders regarding the LG Elections is scheduled for tomorrow (3). Chaired by the Leader of the House, Bimal Rathnayake, the meeting will take place in the afternoon.
A key agenda item is the decision to reissue nominations for the LG Elections. Political parties have agreed to cancel previous nominations due to issues such as candidates switching parties, leaving the country, or retiring from politics.
