Marking of Grade 5 Scholarship Exam Papers Temporarily Suspended Amid Investigation

The Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Thilaka Jayasundara, has announced the temporary suspension of the paper marking process for the Grade 5 Scholarship Examination, which was held on September 15.

Speaking at a press conference today (20th), she stated, “We will not proceed with the paper marking until all investigation results are received and a decision is made. Until then, activities related to the release of the results have been suspended.”

The suspension follows allegations that a question paper from the exam was leaked, prompting an investigation by the Department of Examinations. The initial report has been handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), which is conducting further inquiries.

Jayasundara further stated that if the leak is confirmed, arrangements will be made to hold the examination again. “It has also been brought to our attention that some tutors discussed model papers in the days leading up to the exam, violating regulations. Disciplinary action will be taken against those involved,” she added.

She emphasized that if the paper leak is verified, legal action will be taken against those responsible.

This year’s scholarship exam was conducted at 2,849 centers across the country, with 323,879 candidates participating.

The Ministry of Education will decide whether the Grade 5 Scholarship Examination will be reconducted once the CID and Department of Examinations complete their investigations into the alleged question paper leak.

A special statement issued by the Ministry of Education on the controversy confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and a final decision will be made after its conclusion.
