Meteorology Department to Deliver More Accurate Forecasts with New Doppler Radars by 2026

Starting in 2026, the Meteorology Department will be able to provide more accurate weather forecasts, thanks to the installation of two Doppler radar systems by the end of this year.

Speaking to the media, Deputy Director of Forecasting and Early Warning, M.M.P. Mendis, explained that these radar systems will be supplied as part of a grant from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Civil construction work to install the radars is set to begin soon in Puttalam and Pottuvil.

The department has informed the President of the critical need for at least two Doppler radar systems. However, it currently lacks adequate funding for the installation in Pottuvil, Mendis noted.

“Doppler radars can detect not only the intensity of precipitation but also the motion of rain droplets, enabling more accurate monitoring of flash flood conditions. Currently, we can only measure rainfall after it occurs, but with Doppler radars, we’ll be able to estimate the water content in clouds the same day,” he said.

He further explained that Doppler radar technology emits electromagnetic pulses that bounce off raindrops, allowing meteorologists to analyze data and identify severe weather conditions. This technology will be a crucial tool in protecting lives and property.

The data received from the Doppler radar will significantly improve the forecasting of flash floods, Mendis added.
