Minister of Public Security, Tiran Alles, has decided to retract the Online Safety Bill he initially presented in Parliament, opting to reintroduce it with a series of new amendments.
The ‘Online Safety Bill’ was introduced in Parliament on 3 October by the Public Security Minister. However, it faced criticism and debates from various local and international stakeholders, who argued that there was a lack of clarity in the Bill’s provisions.
In response, Minister Alles clarified that the decision to withdraw the Bill was not a result of external pressure but rather a proactive step to refine and enhance the legislation. He expressed his intent to reintroduce the Bill in Parliament after making the necessary amendments.(Ceylon Today)
