Public Security Minister Tiran Alles is said to have engaged in discussions with President Ranil Wickremesinghe regarding the imminent appointment of the next Inspector General of Police (IGP), a matter expected to be finalized ‘very soon,’ according to a reliable source.
As per the Constitution, the President holds the authority for the appointment. The recent retirement of Mr. C. D. Wickramaratne, who served in the position for an extended period, has prompted the need for a successor. Earlier reports hinted at a delay in the IGP appointment due to differences between the President and the minister over the proposed candidate.
Upon the President’s selection, the appointment must receive approval from the Constitutional Council, led by Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena. Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena and Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, along with three members from civil society, constitute this ten-member body.
A reliable source disclosed that the President and the minister have reached an agreement on the proposed appointment. Speculation within political circles suggests that Senior DIG Deshabandu Tennakoon is a likely choice for the prestigious position
