The Ministry of Power and Energy has announced the formation of a committee to review various renewable energy projects recently agreed upon, including approximately 40 wind and solar power initiatives.
Professor Udayanga Hemapala, Secretary of the Ministry, stated that the review will cover projects such as the Mannar Wind Power Project, which are expected to generate between 5 to 100 megawatts of electricity.
Professor Hemapala pointed out that some agreements made under these projects have been found to be disadvantageous to the country, while certain lands selected for the projects could be better utilized for agriculture.
The committee will also assess the cost per unit of electricity purchased from these projects and evaluate their economic benefits.
The committee has been instructed to submit its report within a month, after which the Ministry will work toward implementing the projects in a way that maximizes benefits for the country.
