The National Anti-Human Trafficking Task Force (NAHTTF) has issued multiple warnings about the growing recruitment of Sri Lankans to cyber scam centers in Myanmar.
Recent reports indicate that Sri Lankans residing in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are being trafficked to Myanmar in groups, with NAHTTF receiving credible information of a surge in new recruits at these scam centers.
Investigations have found that traffickers deceive IT professionals with promises of lucrative job opportunities abroad. Victims are often taken to locations like Dubai under the pretense of job interviews and subsequently forced to work illegally in cyber scam centers in Myanmar. They endure severe mental and physical abuse, including electrocution.
NAHTTF advises against using illegal migration routes, highlighting the dangers and legal violations under the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment Act. Job seekers are urged to avoid traveling on visit visas for employment purposes.
The NAHTTF appeals to the public to:
- Opt for safe and legal migration through authorized channels.
- Remain alert and report any suspicious trafficking activities.
- Protect at-risk individuals by notifying authorities of potential dangers faced by Sri Lankan workers abroad.
Reports can be made confidentially to:
