Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) Intercepts 54 kg of Methamphetamine in Chennai; Unravels International Drug Smuggling Operation

In a significant development, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) successfully confiscated 54 kg of methamphetamine from a suspected drug peddler in Chennai on Friday.

According to an official press release, Udayakumar, identified as a Sri Lankan national, was summoned for questioning based on suspicions that he was attempting to smuggle methamphetamine to Sri Lanka. During the interrogation, 2 kg of the illicit drug were seized from his possession. Subsequently, in a follow-up operation, the central drug law enforcement agency apprehended Akbar Ali of Perambur and discovered a concealed stash of 54 kg of methamphetamine in a hideout.

The investigation revealed that the contraband had been sourced from Myanmar, routed through Moreh in Manipur, and was intended for smuggling into Sri Lanka.

Notably, in the year 2023, the NCB’s Chennai zone had previously seized 65.061 kg of methamphetamine and 3,338.018 kg of ganja, both intended for smuggling into Sri Lanka. The accused individuals involved in the drug network numbered 67 and were subsequently arrested, marking a concerted effort by the NCB to dismantle such illicit operations. Source – The Hindu
