In a significant update, the Secretary-General of Parliament has formally apprised the National Election Commission (NEC) of the vacant parliamentary seat previously held by Naseer Ahamed of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress.
The NEC has confirmed the vacancy, citing Naseer Ahamed’s expulsion from the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress as the primary reason. In adherence to established procedures, the Batticaloa District Returning Officer will liaise with the NEC to identify the most fitting candidate to fill this crucial parliamentary position.
Assuring transparency and adherence to due process, the NEC has pledged to announce the chosen candidate through an official Gazette once the nomination process is concluded. This development stands as a testament to the commitment of maintaining the integrity of parliamentary representation in Sri Lanka.
