The National Security Council, led by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, convened yesterday to address a series of bomb threats targeting Indian passenger flights and their potential impact on Sri Lanka’s tourism industry.
According to informed sources, the ongoing threats could deter tourists from visiting Sri Lanka, raising concerns about the sector’s future. It was disclosed that these threats are typically received shortly after the aircraft enter Sri Lankan airspace, prompting all affected flights to divert to Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake for security checks.
In a recent incident, Sri Lankan authorities managed two simultaneous bomb threat diversions, successfully handling the situation with available resources. Following this, the council decided to deploy additional law enforcement personnel to strengthen security measures and enhance response capabilities.
At a Cabinet media conference, Cabinet Spokesman Vijitha Herath confirmed that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is conducting in-depth investigations into the series of bomb threats impacting passenger aircraft.
